EVOLUTION OF STYLE
Petra was born as a faithful interpreter of the Bordeaux model, with gravity-flow winemaking, no use of pumps, and long aging in wood. But in recent years, the vineyards, which we like to call the Plants of Petra, have begun giving us grapes that feel less “international” and increasingly expressive of this specific place. They carry the imprint of the Tuscan Coast and its layered history, more than 20 million years in the making.
EPIGENETICS
Epigenetics is the phenomenon by which the plant does not change its DNA, but learns to respond to the place where it lives. It registers climate, light, water, wind, and soil. Year after year, that memory is returned in the fruit. In harmony with this evolution, our winemaking has adapted:
- increasingly precise parcel-by-parcel selections
- fermentations in smaller vessels
- whole berries, to enhance freshness and fruit expression
- gentler extraction, to emphasize the purity of the juice
- longer macerations, to build silkier, more complex tannins
